Borderline and Beyond

Where Has the Time Gone?!

I keep thinking, "I REALLY need to write a blog post!" Then a week disappears, then another... and somehow it's been SIX MONTHS! I honestly don't know where the time has gone; it just seems to trickle through my fingers!

It's not that I've had nothing to write about; in fact, it's quite the opposite. Life has just been so hectic that I find it really tough to find even an hour to sit down and gather my thoughts. In fact, it's Tramlines TOMORROW- and I've just realised I've only written three blog posts since the last one. That's how bad it is! I get loads of ideas while I'm walking to work, sitting on the bus, or drifting off to sleep and by the time I get a chance to open my laptop, something else has happened. There genuinely don't seem to be enough hours in the day. In one way, it's a good thing; I'm building a rich and fulfilling life, and being busy keeps me out of trouble. But in another way, my blog is important to me, and I really didn't intend my entries to be so sporadic, so I NEED to dedicate more time to it. I wanted it to be a record of things I do, something for my kids to read one day, and even build up some resources that might help other people. I'm a little disappointed that I've let it slide so much.

Soooo, what have I been up to? I passed my first year studying Sociology at The University of Sheffield. I survived deadlines, exams and university strikes! For my final exam, I had some really difficult news the week before and struggled so hard to revise. I was convinced I'd failed and was all ready to resit in the Summer. However, just before I walked into the Banksy Museum in Krakow, I got the text through that I'd passed and had actually done pretty well. This is a massive achievement for me. I've started a degree twice before and never even made it through a semester, so to be sticking to something and succeeding is huge for me. I'm really enjoying studying, using my brain (realising it still works!) I'm excited for the second year, where the marks actually count. Again, I'm committed to staying on top of readings and other work; let's see how well I manage to stick to it.

I'm still loving my work with young people, and I honestly can't believe I've stuck at a job for almost a year! I've also been busy with the Waythrough Life Experience Council, helping to shape projects, meeting with senior leaders and even starting discussions around bringing harm reduction work and naloxone into the university. If you'd told me a few years ago that people would be asking for my opinion because of my lived experience, I honestly wouldn't have believed you. This year I've also had opportunities I never imagined I'd have. Speaking at Sheffield's Citywide Naloxone Conference, meeting academics and professionals whose work I've admired, and being invited into conversations about shaping future harm reduction work has been surreal. Every time something like that happens, I have a little moment where I think, "How on earth did I end up here?"

My first trip abroad in ten years was Costa Rica last September, and it was a life-changing experience that really gave me the travelling bug! So in June I packed my backpack again and headed to Krakow, then Paris, then finally down to Brittany to spend some bonding time with my dad, step-mum and aunt. When I think about how difficult my family relationships have been through much of my life, it was amazing to reconnect and feel close to my dad. Solo travel still feels slightly unbelievable to me. There was a time when just getting through the day felt overwhelming, and now I'm navigating airports, trains and unfamiliar cities by myself. Each trip reminds me how much my world has grown.

Home has changed a lot too. Most people know about my awesome black and white cat, Ziggy. He's been with me through some really tough times, and is my best mate! But he was getting lonely while I was at work and uni. So at Christmas, I got another black and white kitten- Chico. Then I think I have officially earned my "Crazy Cat Lady" title, as last month we welcomed another little kitten into our family- Angelo. I can't believe how well they all get on, and being responsible for them helps me to keep going on days when I might rather stay under my duvet. Admittedly, those days are getting rarer, but it's just not an option with three little mouths to feed!

Not everything has been glitter, rainbows and unicorns; there have been some really tough times as well. I've got three amazing sons, but I don't talk about my children on my blog because their story is not mine to tell, and they haven't given their consent. Anyone who knows me will know that reunification with my kids is my ultimate goal. I dream of having my family back together, and I fight every day for my boys and to build a life that includes them. There have been a few setbacks that have been out of my control. At times I've felt completely powerless, and I'll admit, even a little despondent. But one thing never changes, and that's how deeply I love my children. I'll keep fighting for them and doing what's right for them as long as I'm on this planet! It's been a long road, and it feels like the goalposts keep moving, but I'll never give up. My life seems to be full of meetings, assessments, difficult conversations and long waits for decisions. Most days I feel positive and hopeful, then other days I try to get through one step at a time.

On top of all that, I'm trying to look after my physical and mental health, keep on top of a flat that never stays tidy, and then remember that I also have to sleep and eat! I've applied for my provisional driving licence... that's my next major goal because a set of wheels would give me an extra few hours on days when I'm bussing it to uni and work. Sooo many forms...medical forms about my sleep apnea and various other things 😉

It's a lot.
But when I look back, I don't just see a busy calendar; I see a life.
Not a perfect one. Not an easy one. But a life that's full of purpose, learning, opportunities and people who matter.
A few years ago, my world was incredibly small. Now I'm juggling university, work, advocacy, travel, conferences, family, and plans for the future. Sometimes I wish there were another six hours in every day, but I also know this is exactly the kind of problem I hoped I'd have one day.

So this is really just a little check-in.
I'm still here.
Still learning.
Still rebuilding. Still probably overcommitting myself.
And hopefully, finding my way back to writing a bit more regularly.

For now? It's 10 pm, Tramlines starts tomorrow, and I haven't even decided what I'm wearing. A bit different from last year, when each day felt like my own little fashion show!

Before I disappear again (hopefully not for quite so long!), I'd love to hear from you. What have you been up to lately? Have you started something new, travelled somewhere unexpected, achieved a goal, or are you just trying to keep your head above water like the rest of us? Leave me a comment and let me know what life's been looking like for you. I genuinely love hearing your stories, and it's one of my favourite parts of writing this blog.

Until next time... take care of yourselves, and don't leave it as long as I did before checking in! 💙
